Purpose-built duct estimating software is genuinely good at what it does. The question is whether you want to own the tool or own the answer.
Dedicated duct and piping estimating software — FastDuct and FastPipe from FastEST, PlanSwift, Trimble's mechanical products and others — has been around a long time and is built by people who understand the trade. If you have used one and liked it, this page probably is not for you.
Software sells you capability. A service sells you output. Both cost money; they cost it differently.
| Duct estimating software | FlowLogic Estimating | |
|---|---|---|
| The purchase | A license, usually annual, often per seat | A flat price per plan set |
| Time to first takeoff | Install, configure, learn, build your item database | Send a link |
| Who counts the fittings | You, with better tools | Us |
| Cost in a slow quarter | The same | Zero |
| What you own afterward | The tool and the setup work you invested | The takeoff |
The license is the visible number. The invisible one is configuration: your material list, your labor units, your gauge and seam rules, your fitting library. Getting a duct estimating package properly dialed in for one shop is real work, and it is usually done by the person who can least afford the hours.
That investment pays back if you bid enough. It is dead weight if you bid twelve jobs a year.
That last one comes up more than people expect. Using a service alongside software is not a contradiction — it is how you catch a busy month without hiring.

Whether you are testing the idea or just past capacity this month, it is the same starting point: send a plan set and a bid date.
